Miami Gay Men’s Chorus Fact Sheet

Founded in 1999, the Chorus has grown from 6 members to a group of more than 100 voices singing in four-part harmony. Members represent a complete cross-section of the gay community—including lawyers, medical professionals, bankers, realtors, stockbrokers, retailers, teachers, media executives, entrepreneurs, and retirees. Member’s ages range from early 20’s into their 80’s and they live all over Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Some members are single, some are partnered, and many are parents.

Under the direction of Anthony Cabrera, the Chorus provides a positive and welcoming atmosphere for gay men to meet and sing. Unlike some organizations, clubs or bars, we welcome everyone as a member. Anyone interested in joining is invited to do so. No auditions required.

The Chorus performs two shows a year—usually in December and May. The shows always involve lots of singing, but chorus members also dance, act and deliver a heartfelt and often humorous look at gay life in Miami. Previous shows include: extABBAganza, Elton John, The Nutcracker, and Blame it On Broadway.

The community response to our performances continues to grow—increasing almost 30% each season. We have moved to increasingly larger venues over the years, performing at the Colony Theater, the Lincoln Theater, and the Gusman in downtown Miami. Over 5,000 people have attended our performances since the first show in 1999.

Corporate and individual support continues to increase, through donations and advertising sales in our programs. Participants include restaurants, local media, realtors, physicians, shops, stores and law firms all across Miami. Their support indicates the importance of the Chorus’ audiences to the local business community.

The annual operating budget for the Chorus is $100,000. The Chorus is a registered non-profit 501c organization. Fiscally sound since its inception, the Chorus’ revenues always exceed their expenses. Members of the all-volunteer Board of Directors manage the Chorus’s finances, legal issues, show selection process, marketing, public relations and grant applications.

The Chorus receives financial support from the public and private sectors, with grants from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council These grants recognize the Chorus’ growing cultural achievements and significance to the entire community.

The Chorus is a proud member of GALA (the international Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses), whose next international festival will take place here in Miami in July 2008 when over 8,000 gay and lesbian singers are expected to be here from around the world.
